Curse of Strahd Props

This.  This, so much.

I've been an advocate for high-touch, experiential tabletop gaming for years.  Propnomicon itself started as a way to share resources and inspiration for Call of Cthulhu campaigns.  That was the first RPG to emphasize the use of props and handouts to help immerse the players into the game world.  Now that approach is spreading to Dungeons and Dragons, a change that's long overdue.

Over on Twitter, Eric Jordan has posted a long thread detailing the props he created for his "Curse of Strahd" campaign.  It includes dozens of items.  Letters, notes, flyers, pamphlets, maps, and even full blown books.  It's an impressive collection, and a great demonstration of how to use props for worldbuilding.  I highly recommend clicking through and checking out the whole comment chain.

 

The Monkey's Paw

"The Monkey's Paw" is a horror short story by English author W. W. Jacobs. It first appeared in Harper's Monthly in 1902, and was reprinted in his third collection of short stories, The Lady of the Barge also in 1902. In the story, three wishes are granted to the owner of The Monkey's Paw, but the wishes come with an enormous price for interfering with fate.

 I dearly love literary props, and this recreation of the titular artifact from the story is one of the best I've seen.  It comes to us from the talented MonsterLabs Studios.

This recreation of an Artificer's Thunder Gauntlet from Dungeons and Dragons comes to us from a user on Reddit.  It was crafted by one of his fellow players, who gifted each player in the game with a physical prop based on their character.

Spooky Jack lives up to his name with this creepy trepanned skull.  The process was surprisingly common in history despite the significant risks of opening up the skull without the benefit of modern medical knowledge.  The Latin inscription roughly translates to "Dare to be wise, Look to the end".

It's no secret that Nazi forces attempted to harness occult powers to win World War II, but it's still disturbing to see just how extensive their efforts were. The talented Andrea Bonazzi returns to our pages with this photograph taken by Dr. Henry "Indiana" Jones.  If the date is accurate it would mark his first encounter with Nazi archeological efforts.
