Just the thing for defending against a mob of crazed cultists, although I wonder how effective it would be against deep ones, elder things, or shoggoth
Oh, my, I want one. That's just the kind of thing a misguided expedition leader would trust to fend off shoggoth attacks on a return to the mountains of madness.
I love the recent coverage of period-appropriate firearms, by the way. They're often neglected for a variety of political reasons, but no 1930s investigator worth his salt would be foolish enough to go up against the Mythos unarmed.

Putting on my meta-gaming hat, I'd say Shoggoths were pretty much immune to bullets, while Elder Things and Deep Ones only take minor damage. You *could* kill the latter two with a machine gun, but it would be like killing a tree- you just chew through with bullets.
Based on Lovecraft's stories I'd say both Deep One hybrids (humans that haven't made the full change) and Mi-Go can be killed by bullets.

I think every investigator in the 20's and 30's would have a gun, but it probably wouldn't help them too much. Heck, Sam Spade was always packing heat and look how much he got knocked around. Heh.
Guns are good for killing cultists and clinging to as totems. ;)
Players in my RPG campaigns have killed Mi-Go, Byakhee, and ghouls with volleys of shotgun fire, but they know better than to rely on combat to solve problems in general.
My favorite sadistic-GM move was making them play Cthulhu Invictus which, set in ancient Rome, denies them guns and psychotherapy.
And you can be sure the Feds packed a few along on their little investigation of Innsmouth.
Very well done though. Props to the builder!
Gotta have a Browning, ‘cause them Mi-go are tough. Just remember what Gerneral Curtis Goatheart said in the classified Firesign theater film: “2. Avoid eye contact. 3. If there are no eyes, avoid all contact”. Remember: “Syrup won’t stop ‘em”!
Never fear, for we have got
The Maxim gun, and they have not.

Somewhat apropos of this, I made a proposal for a Lovecraft Action Shooting league over at my blog that's gotten quite a few suggestions for an investigator's arsenal. It turns out a heck of a lot of gun enthusiasts love Lovecraft.
Thank you for your nice comments and the link. I am always looking for inspiration, and this blog's a great resource! Be sure to also see my LXG Goon gun: http://www.air-sharp.com/loegeak.htm And my own blog is right here: http://killbuckets.blogspot.com/
