Deep Ward Cthulhu Idol

After doing this for nearly twenty years I love stumbling across a new take on the traditional Cthulhu idol.  This highly stylized "Deep Ward" sculpt comes to us from Fox Henderson at the Monkey Rodeo. 

 

Gage Prentiss Cthulhu Statue

Longtime friend of the site Tim Lonegan dropped me a note yesterday about this incredible piece.  He commissioned a truly unique Cthulhu statue from artist Gage Prentiss, himself no stranger to these pages.  I strongly recommend clicking through on the link to check out the full gallery of photographs and the detailed backstory behind the statue.

Anders Lerche Cthulhu Idol

This hefty beast comes to us from Danish artist Anders Lerche.  It's an unusual piece in that the casting is a latex skin filled with urethane foam.  I believe that would make it not only a nifty Mythos prop, but a LARP-safe weapon as well.  Heh.  

 

Cthulhu Fhtagn! Romphoe Edition.

Artist Sqooex Romphoe brings us this masterful take on the traditional Cthulhu idol.  It features some incredible detail work and is one of the very few asymmetric sculpts I've seen. 

 

Wooden Cthulhu Idol

I love this primitive carved wooden Cthulhu idol from artist Cheng YuYu.  Realistically, there are probably a lot more of this kind of effigy in this world than the ornately sculpted pieces we normally focus on.   

 

Beninside Cthulhu Idol

Thai artist Beninside brings us their Cthulhu idol, featuring a paint job from Paneaw Colour.  It's always nice to see a take incorporating the multiple eyes of Lovecraft's original sketch.

 

 

Cthulhu Fhtagn! Landron Edition.

Landron Artifacts returns to our pages with this very nice Cthulhu idol.  The stone texture is really well done. 

 

Yeray Llinares Cthulhu Idol

The talented Yeray Llinares returns to our pages with this excellent Cthulhu idol.   

Update:  An anonymous commenter has accused Mr. Llinares of plagiarizing the work of fellow Mythos artist Yoneyama Keisuke.  As evidence, they provided a link to his Cthulhu sculpt posted on Instagram back in 2018.  I've posted the best side-by-side comparison I can manage below.  Just click through on the link to see the comparison in higher resolution.   I've made Mr. Llinares aware of the accusation on his own Instagram post.

 

Update II:  Mr. Llinares contacted me directly and explained he created the sculpt years ago using a reference photo from Pinterest.  He's pulled the original post and followed up with an acknowledgement he was inspired by Mr. Keisuke's work. 

 

 

Polynesian Cthulhu Idol

The Monkey Rodeo returns to our pages after a long absence with this Polynesian-themed Cthulhu idol.  I love the sculpt, but it really needs a wash to bring out the details like the inscription along the base.

 

 

Yoneyama Cthulhu Idol

"c.godzilla" has posted some great pictures of this outstanding Cthulhu idol, originally sculpted by the talented Keisuke Yoneyama.

 

 

Babylonian Cthulhu Idol

BVDV14 brings us this recreation of the Babylonian Cthulhu idol featured in Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities series on Netflix.  It's based on the original design created by artist and designer Guy Davis, one of the director's long-time collaborators.

This multi-eyed take on the traditional Cthulhu idol comes to us from artist Skylar Greencorn.

Taiwanese artist Vincent Cheng brings us this primitive-style carved wooden Cthulhu idol.

 

 

Cthulhu Fhtagn! Wolwesmetal Edition.

This obelisk-style Cthulhu idol comes to us from Wolwesmetal.  A great sculpt made even better by the excellent patina.

 

 

Cthulhu Fhtagn! Broom edition.

Michael Broom brings us this faceless Cthulhu idol.  It's a really interesting sculpt, but the shape of the wings jumped out to me.  I love how their inner curve echoes both the arc across the top of the head and the one from the head down the shoulders.  It's a really interesting geometry. 

 

Cthulhu Fhtagn! Manylegs Edition.

This highly stylized Cthulhu idol comes to us from Many Legs Art.  The sculpt is fantastic, but I'm not crazy about the spotty gold highlights on the patina.

 

 

Cthulhu Fhtagn! Hatswell Edition

It's been a long, long time, but the Hatswell Cthulhu idol is once again available.  Julien Hatswell first produced this piece way back in 1997.  Since then it's become an iconic interpretation, similar in stature to the 1999 Steven Hickman sculpt from Bowen Designs.  This morning it popped up in my Instagram feed, one of the rare examples of the algorithm actually working.  I was overjoyed to discover he's producing it in limited quantities and immediately placed an order.  You can do the same over at his Etsy page.

 

 

Cthulhu Fhtagn! Kissoon Edition.

I've been doing this for close to twenty years now.  In that time I've posted about hundreds of Cthulhu idols, featuring everything from viking themed statuettes to primitive idols carved from wood.  Today I'm immensely pleased to bring you something I've never seen before.

This Cthulhu idol from Kissoon is not only a wonderfully stylized sculpt, but the first bifacial statuette I've seen.  The rear of the statue is a mirror image of the front.  It looks hella cool in rotation, which you can see by clicking through on the link.
