You Gotta Have Heart

Nate Barton brings us this phenomenal prop heart. The sculpt has an amazing amount of detail.

If the artist were to say that was cast from a real human heart, I would believe it. Wow.

What an outstanding sculpt, it really has all the texture expected of a real organ.

Having somebody’s heart is not always negative. In a more sentimental time, people often kept mementos of their (hopefully departed) loved ones. For example poet Percy Shelley had his heart cut out after he drowned off the coast in Italy in a boating accident. By the way, his wife was the author Mary Shelley who wrote Frankenstein and no, it was not a morbid act, but one of love and remembrance.

A loved one’s hair might be woven into a watch chain, a bracelet, ring or a large framed piece of art. These items are still being made today: http://www.victorianhairjewelry.com/ and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hair_jewellery

Sarah Bernhardt had a human skull given to her by Victor Hugo inscribed with a verse, while it was a stranger’s skull, it is the thought that counts. Believe it or not all these memento mori, relics, and other tokens of remembrance were not considered morbid by 19th century standards, just romantic.

It's interesting that you mention that, CoastConFan, because the hope of doing this project in the first place is to sell copies of this heart. They could be used for in game props, displayed in jars, ect. You could give it as a romantic gesture to a special someone!

But still. It's so weird.
