The Healer

This wonderfully alien idol comes to us from Barbelith2000AD.  It's the kind of thing I expect you'd find in a little roadside temple on the Plain of Leng.

What a great piece of imagination. I was immediately struck with two completely disparate images simultaneously. First to come to mind was the head of the reclining Dreaming God, Dagoth from the movie Conan the Destroyer (1984). It’s probably due to the hole in barbelith 2000ad’s Healer figure. The Dagoth statue itself is a modification of the Aztec god Chacmool, but I’m drifting off target here. Yes I see the Buddha similarities, but that’s way too easy..

The other image that came to mind was the turquoise-colored Diva Plavalaguna from the movie The Fifth Element (1997) – yet another movie about a quest for a powerful artifact. Although in the first film, a quest artifact is added to the figure and bad things happen, in the Fifth Element the quest artifacts comes out of the Diva and when used properly a good thing happens once the puzzle is solved.

Mind you this is just my personal take and immediate impression when I first laid eyes on this figure. It certainly doesn’t mean it’s so, just my imagination and memory going wild with connections. I suggest you go to barbelith’s deviant art page for some more outstanding works.

Ricky Leach is a fantastic sculptor. There are lots of images of his work on his Facebook page. Well worth a look
