Wings Over Antarctica, Part Trois

I had originally planned to show the new Miskatonic Antarctic expedition logo tomorrow, but things went better than expected and I was able to finish the roughs early. These are still subject to change, but they're pretty close to being ready. Other than replacing the Dornier Wal with the Dornier Merkur II the changes are relatively minor.

First off, the black and white line art. This would be used for documents, letterheads, envelopes, and such. If it goes over well I'll do a version with slightly heavier line widths and a little grain for a print reproduction.

Next, the color version of the logo. This will be used for small items like the patches and pins. The outer ring has been changed from light grey to Miskatonic red. It's a good tie-in to the University logo and makes the whole design a lot snappier.

Here's a variant of the color logo with more of an Art Deco feel. It takes advantage of countershading to provide dimensionality and uses more muted colors. This is what I'd like to use for larger reproductions like T-shirts.

I still need to work out a stencil version, but these should cover most uses. As always, your thoughts are appreciated.

I want that art deco version, on a polo. *nods*

Overall, I like it. A lot.

Looks really good. A lot more official looking. This would look great stenciled on the side of a wooden crate!

Having missed out on picking your previous collections I like the way this is going very much.

That deco version is amazing. Would be nice if the patch could pull that off, but I know nothing about the technology limits of the embroidery machine and whether or not they can reproduce that look.

@ Alex Kaeda

Thanks. I'm inordinately proud of the deco version myself.

@ Jason McKittrick

Hopefully it won't be too long before it is stenciled on a wooden crate.

@ Mr. Primate

Thank you for the very kind words. I think this project is going to be special.

@ James Floyd Kelly

The shading effect wouldn't be possible with embroidery. That said, I have an idea for a prop item that could use it. If all goes according to plan it will not only look great, but be perfectly in line with the period.

I agree that this is looking very good, indeed :)

Awesome. Now we need some patches.

Not sure if you do these or not, but I wanted to let people know all about your site. So I am sharing this award with you.

Come by my blog for the image and read what I said about your blog.

Thanks,
Tim

I think the earlier design with the Wal has a better balance of graphic elements, the plane fitting very well into the upper part of the space, its elements balancing on the centerline and harmonizing with the Antarctic continent below. And that its more extreme stylization reads better, particularly at reduced sizes. But, seeing your rendition of the Merkur II, I no longer feel that it is a less good-looking plane than the Wal, the shaded Art Deco version in particular is very spiff.

Having looked at the photos more closely, it strikes me the the engines on these planes are _huge_.

Mind that tail wheel. Might wanna replace that with a skid ... I'd change the color of the 'rays' behind the continent, too ... Make 'em black or gray or light blue. I think they're a little distracting - just a little strong. And make them widen at the outer ends! So they look more like thin pie slices than lines. Very art deco. I'm sorry - I don't mean to demand anything. Just trying to politely suggest. Please ignore me or edit this comment, as you see fit. I do think the tail wheel seems 'fragile.' I don't mean too thin a line - It just seems like something that would dig into the snow. Unless you have photo evidence of such, in which case I'll shut my mouth. Have a nice day. Thanks for making all this neat swag for us, the living.

Outstanding logo, the art deco is absolutely stunning! It would look great in a "propaganda style" poster)
This new logo is more accurate as you explained previously but I think I still prefer the Do. Wal to the Do. Merkur profile...
But then again, it's more "historically" accurate so it's obviously a better Prop, a great improvement!
I hope I'll be able to purchase a revised patch as I missed the previous one.

Lovely patches. I think one done up on a vintage leather jacket would be appropriate.

I have always been somewhat confused with the name of the southernmost continent, Antartica. It seems that Ant-artica indeed lacks ants.

beautiful, another great job, will you be going through Kickstarter or funding the prod yourself?.
I am always in awe of your work and would love to add to my collection.

I am wanting a patch to go on my figure skating jacket. Being an adult skater, the mostly much younger skaters are already accustomed to my doing odd things but like it. This would be fantastic with the USFSA skating level patches. ;-)
