Say what you will about Gary Gygax, but he really hit it out of the park when he created D-Series of adventures for Dungeons & Dragons. The Drow elves are the first genuine example of clever worldbuilding I can remember experiencing in a tabletop RPG. The imagery of their culture, and the infamous Vault of the Drow, were the only time Mr. Gygax tapped into his love of weird fiction.
