Polish artist Sebastian Jarmołowicz brings us a recreation of the pre-Christian idol posts found across Slavic Europe. Personally, I've been a lot more interested in Slavic mythology and history since I was exposed to the Witcher books and video games. It's too bad schools don't give the folklore of eastern Europe as much attention as the Norse and Greco-Roman pantheons.
Reminds me of the horse stones of Mongolia....
ReplyDeleteI just read an article that says Heathen (pre-Christian Norse religions) are making huge comeback in Icelandic regions.
ReplyDeleteThe Zbruch idol on which it is based is quite controversial itself - one of a kind, attributed not only to Slavs but Celts, Thracians, Turkic peoples etc. Some archaeologists consider it a 19th-century fake, which sadly sounds rather convincing (given its mysterious origin, good state of preservation and the lack of similar findings elsewhere).
