Cthulhu Fhtagn! Kelatow Edition.

Effects artist Lawrence Kelatow was kind enough to send over this Cthulhu idol cast in bronze.  You can do a lot with paint, but nothing looks more like metal than metal.

  1. I appreciate how expensive bronze casting is versus casting in polymers. This disquieting recumbent figure is a symphony of Mythos subtleness. There’s something about this figure that hints of South Sea cultures to me. Then again it’s probably just me. Mind you bronze is not found in those indigenous cultures, but it could be an unknown “space metal” for game purposes.

Easter Island (TeHenua) although best known for the large hewn figures, Maoi, there are a number of petroglyphs of the cult figure of the Birdman (Tangata Manu) that are of interest and overlooked. This bronze figure somehow puts me in mind of a Birdman cult figure. Just mod the bill into tentacles and you have it. Also don’t forget the unusual pictogram texts found there. You could put together a faux island, add in the figure and the text to start off your adventurers.

  2. Thank you all for the kind words; The casting is actually a faux bronze casting made by mixing a very large amount of bronze powder in Smooth-On's SmoothCast 325 resin. The result was treated with steelwool and then polished to get a luster that is indistinguishable from actual bronze. tThe casting is more Bronze than resin actually - I used the maximum amount possible. I'm in the process of making a tablaux for it; I will take the island suggestion and use it. I really like the idea.
