UK artist David Kirkby brings us a wonderful figurine of The Horned God. The pagan idol is cast in resign impregnated with bronze powder. His writeup of the creation process includes an endorsement of silicone tipped sculpting tools, something I heartily agree with. They're awesome.
This image of Cernnunos or Cocidius, a version of Pan in Britain, but also in Celtic and Norse areas really drives home the origin of the word “panic” in its original meaning. The use of metal powder makes this cold casting look a good deal like bronze and the build pictures are really detailed.
ReplyDeleteSerendipitously, I have just recently reread the classic fantasy story, Piper at the Gates of Dawn (1976) by Richard Cowper (the pen name of John Murry Jr), the title, which of course is a nod to the title of Chapter 7 of The Wind in the Willows of the same name, by Kenneth Grahame (1908). Of course most of the readers of Weird Fiction will recall the novella, The Great God Pan (1890) by Arthur Machen. Most easily of course those of you of a certain age will recall the title of the first album of Pink Floyd, which has the same name, which came out in 1967.
For you prop makers, how about an original 10th century panpipe dug in York: http://panflute.net/history/viking_panpipe/panpipes.htm

Broadening out to actual Pagan and occult items? There a lot of cool stuff out there:

@ IanC : It's possible to leave out a few of those parameters without having to go to tinyurl.com to tame a novel-sized web-address:

(And the above uses the "a href" HTML to hotlink the text... I could as easily have hotlinked the words "Images of Ashen Chassan"....)
