Case Nightmare Green

It's been far too long since the talented Florian Mellies graced our pages.  He returns with a cool modern Mythos tableau featuring a captured sacrificial dagger.  Get a look at the details of the sculpt, and the text of the computer display, by clicking through to the high resolution picture.

  1. That's always the bothersome question, working a risky business with someone with whom you don't have a close and longstanding bond: just how far can you trust them, especially in trouble?

Cults offer sacred brotherhood to their members -- not to hirelings -- but are notorious for betraying even the "lower" members' safety, health, or lives for the sake of the leaders' interests. Jonestown, anyone? Or for examples from Hare Krishna, read John Hubner and Lindsey Gruson's Monkey on a Stick.

  2. @ Raven

The horror stories from some of the Mormon fundamentalist sects are my go-to inspiration for Mythos cults. A long nightmare of brutality, incest, and child molestation. That's the kind of thing I think was going on under the surface, no pun intended, in Innsmouth.

  3. Shuttered windows (eyes peering through the slats), and noises from the attic.

A recurring image in Lovecraft stories (and it also summons up V.C. Andrews's Flowers in the Attic)....

... but another novelist about child abuse, Andrew Vachss, writes voluminous non-fiction on the same subject to tell everyone this is no fantasy, nor past history, nor relegated to minority sects.

Innsmouth, yes; and Suburbia, and Smalltown, and Cityborough. Saddening, sickening, and enraging.

Perhaps everyone who does this is part Deep One, somewhere in their ancestry. It's all the fault of Deep One DNA. Oh, let us hope...?

(But then their children would have the same DNA, so we would eventually expect the same behavior from the kids -- and that way lies further victimizing of the victims. So, no. The fault lies in ourselves, not in our stars or DNA.)
