Eowyn's Shield

"Buffalo Bill" brings us this detailed recreation of Eowyn's shield from "The Lord of the Rings". It's crafted from real wood with a resin boss and metal edging.

  1. What a nice prop. The central boss really sets the shield off and the realistic painting, rather than a Hollywood-style paintjob adds to the believability. The Witch-king threatened her, that he would "bear away to the houses of lamentation, beyond all darkness, where flesh shall be devoured, and shriveled mind be left naked to the Lidless Eye. That’s Cthonian enough for me.

Really a shield boss is an important part of a shield, that is often overlooked as mere decoration, but it has a specific function: http://www.hurstwic.org/history/articles/manufacturing/text/viking_shields.htm and http://www.metmuseum.org/toah/works-of-art/1984.184.1,2 and http://pinterest.com/StefanAllan/germanic-art-antiquities/ .
