From artist Benjamin Harff comes this stunning recreation of the "real" Silmarillion. In Tolkien's canon the book is a collection of Elvish stories collected and subsequently published by one Bilbo Baggins. This is a copy of that book, the one you would find sitting on the shelf at Bag End.
Producing the book was a year long labor of love that involved meticulously hand drawing the initials and illuminated pages. They were then scanned into a computer and used to highlight text laid out using a conventional word processor. The text block was then hand-bound with a goatskin cover. You can read more about the creation process in this interview with the artist.
That is incredible.
ReplyDeleteWhat, it's not in Sindarin? Or the older parts in Quenya? Jes' kiddin', it's an awesome piece of work.
ReplyDeleteThe Silmarillion is my favorite of Tlolkiens's works. The rendition shown here is enough to leave me speechless . . . almost!
ReplyDeleteTotally awesome! Thanks for sharing this with the rest of us!
It’s always a joy to see the fruits of such a labor of love. I’ve always enjoyed calligraphy and illumination despite the fact that my scrawl is illegible and I have a hard time drawing a straight line with autocad. The sheer depth of work alone is breathtaking. It is truly a work of art.
ReplyDeleteThat makes a bee line to the top of the wish list.
