That is a nice prop and the variations of color is quite nice. Wikipedia has a pretty good article about the diffusion of paper making into Europe: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_paper . The history of the diffusion of paper making from China to the Middle East to Europe is a fascinating scholarly subject. Eventually, paper became cheap enough to use as a common wrapper.
