Beyond the Elder sigils from the Simon Necronomicon and Lovecraft's own branch version, the visuals were mostly based on medieval woodcuts with a little tweaking to add a Mythos-vibe, and close up shots of various intestinal parasites. Those things are scarier than any fictional critter I've ever seen.
