At the Mountains of Madness Dream Casting

Guillermo Del Toro says he'd love to work with Hugh Jackman in this interview.

The mention of James McAvoy or Tom Cruise starring in "At the Mountains of Madness" didn't excite me, but Hugh Jackman playing William Dyer? I'm there.

Not that anyone asked me, but I'd like to see Ron Pearlman as Frank Pabodie (getting rid of the superfluous "Larson" character in the leaked script), McAvoy as Danforth, and Anthony Hopkins or CiarĂ¡n Hinds as Prof. Lake.

  1. I don't think I could sit through MoM if Cruise was in it. I like the idea of Jackman though. I don't know who McAvoy.

  2. Oh yeah, casting matters! And I would cheerfully see the actors you name, in anything. They've all proven their ability in period/costume, i.e. non-modern, pieces.

But say... [he said wickedly]... why not Harrison Ford as Professor Lake, and Mark Hamill as young Gedney (the graduate student last seen on a sled with a dog)? That would at least subvert audience expectations....

@ Arcane: James McAvoy played the faun Mr. Tumnus in the first new Narnia film, and the preternaturally skilled assassin-trainee in Wanted with Angelina Jolie and Morgan Freeman. He's also playing the young Professor Xavier in an upcoming X-Men prequel.

  3. What about Kurt Russell as Lake -- an homage to John Carpenter's The Thing, who included an homage to Lovecraft by giving writing credit to Frank Armitage.

  4. What maniac suggested Tom Cruise? That would render the entire film unwatchable. James McAvoy would be good, though, I've been impressed by him in everything I've seen him do so far.

As for reflexively referencing The Thing, that could be an interesting idea, seeing as the short story "Who Goes There" by John W. Cambell, which The Thing was based on, was written as a homage (according to the author, a "spiritual sequel") to At The Mountains of Madness.
