The Yellow Sign, Redux

I fiddled around with the "Yellow Sign" sigil and made a few changes to the design. The whole discussion about it's symbolism and history can be found over here. Click through for the full sized version.

And here's a look at it out in the wild, so to speak.

  1. For some reason, I can't help thinking of alchemical apparatus, to do with distillation. It's as though some mad glassblower had decided to save alchemists all the fuss and bother of getting separate glass vessels, by making one vessel that combined in itself the alembic (ambix) with the vertical tube, and the receiving flask with the cooling tube coiling down into it.

  4. Just finished reading the rationale for your new Yellow Sign: did you know that in Western Esoteric lore, the inverted torch is a symbol for Black Magic? The Rider-Waite tarot deck makes explicit reference to its symbolism, specifically as seen in Card XV - The Devil.

So, is Chambers referencing the tarot tradition in his book design and making inferences about the King? Or is he designing his Yellow Sign as part of his contemporary mystical thinking? Not sure. Over to you...

Let me say though that I have never liked the Chaosium Yellow Sign design, especially after reading that it was the artist's originally-submitted and rejected design simply turned upside-down! Therefore I applaud your efforts to find a suitable replacement.

    Three cheers, Propnomicon!
