This Week's Crass Commercialism

I have a number of bottled specimens from Miskatonic University up on Ebay this week . Low on cash? Then click on the "Things In A Bottle" label at the bottom of this post for directions on how to make your own.

Update: In response to some emails, no, these aren't showing up for folks outside the US. Because of the requirements for shipping liquids internationally I unfortunately can't mail them for a reasonable price. The fluid inside the bottles is harmless rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol) or propylene glycol, a moisterizer used in foods and cosmetics, but transporting either via the post is a huge hassle.

I spent the long holiday weekend camping, but later today I should have a look at making one of the definitive Mythos props- tentacles. For less than fifty cents a foot, no less!

  1. How has your paint stood up to the alcohol now over the past few days?

I was considering something of similar design, but was planning on keeping it long term.

  2. The paint in the one using alcohol hasn't reacted at all, but that piece was sealed using multiple layers of liquid acrylic.

The pieces in the bottles with propylene glycol have been rock solid for weeks. Right now I'm leaning toward using propylene glycol for everything in the future. Physically, I like the higher degree of refraction it produces. I'm also far less concerned about algae or bacterial growth now. Based on my experiences over the past six months I don't think it's a problem as long as your materials are scrupulously clean and the fluid is free of nutrients.
