Anomalous Species

The gifted Karen Main returns to our pages with this curious seaside specimen.  The first thing I thought of when I saw it was Elizabeth Bear's excellent Mythos story "Shoggoths in Bloom".

Cthulhu, Cultists, and Cards

Alberto Cano of the Cthulhu Project has a new Kickstarter that features some nifty swag. The core of the effort is a set of Mythos tarot cards from artist Sara Bardi. The basic set includes the 22 cards of the major arcana. Two limited editions featuring card bags dedicated to Cthulhu and the King in Yellow are also available.

The highlight of the project is a beautiful Cthulhu figure accompanied by four cultists. I really like that the statuette can serve as both a stand alone idol and the centerpiece of a miniature display.

The biggest reason I'm supporting this funding drive is that Mr. Cano has a proven track record on Kickstarter. Over the years he's managed multiple projects successfully, handily avoiding the curse that afflicts far too many Mythos efforts.  Most importantly, he keeps patrons updated on the progress of his projects.  Given that this one is already funded, and features a huge number of repeat supporters, I think it's worthy of your support as well.

A Viking Life for Me

This wonderful tableaux of a Viking's every day carry comes to us from Swedish artist Gustav E. Eriksson. Surprisingly, it was done as part of his application to a propmaking program, which makes it even more impressive.

Cthulhu Fhtagn! Shima Edition.

Cthulhu tiki mugs aren't really my cup of tea, no pun intended, but I really like this piece from Chris Shima.  It's a great sculpt without the cheesiness of most offerings.

He Rises From the Sea

This past weekend was the annual Revere Beach Sand Sculpting contest in Boston.  One of the highlights was this tribute to H.P. Lovecraft from Russian artist Dmitry Klimenko, photographed by Grey213.  You'll be seeing sculptures like this on every beach once the stars are right.

The Good Shubin

Ukrainian artist Alice Tochylovska returns to our pages with this Shubin, a species of fae that protects miners.

This Kobold is kind and helpfull. This old man can smell the gas leaks and beware the miners, saving them from danger. He rings his bell to send the warning message. The legend says - if you hear the ring, quickly get out and save yourself. The shubin legend is popular around Donbas and inspired several bars to name their business after the infamous spirit. The creature even inspired its own brand of beer – Good Shubin.

May the blessings of Atom be upon you!  This ornate wasteland shaman costume comes to us from Vulture Productions.

Protective Measures

Before you delve into things man was not meant to know, best to have some protection.  S.D. Williams returns to our pages with this Elder Sign tablet pendant.  I wish I could get a macro shot half as nice as this one.

The Box of Astaroth

Dan Baines returns to our pages with the Box of Astaroth, a seemingly innocuous mantle piece display that contains some very dark items.
The strange occult fetish is a fetus skull adorned with bells and bones. Spells and curses have been hammered into the head with coffin nails; reminiscent of rituals past. The dark history that surrounds this box and the evil it has witnessed are up to the client to fabricate but I think I've given him enough mileage for a convincingly disturbing tale.

The Camping Uruk-Hai

This wonderfully unsavory band of blackhearts comes to us from Martin L N.  He's part of an orcish troupe in the Danish Valhalla LARP.  That includes not only detailed costumes, but a fully themed encampment.

Cthulhu Totem

This unique take on Cthulhu comes to us from professional sculptor David Igo.  I like how he's taken the basic features and pose of Lovecraft's sketch and turned it into something very different.  The sculpt has a very Giger-ish feel, and I mean that in the very best way.

A Clutch of Cthulhus

The talented Jason McKittrick returns to our pages with just a few of his excellent Cthulhu idols.  You'll find his extensive Mythos offerings, along with some very cool pop horror items, at the Cryptocurium website.

Unidentified Specimen

And I really mean "unidentified".  This sketch of an Elder Thing is a beautiful piece of work.  It looks like a diary or notebook page from one of the scientists on the Miskatonic expedition to the Antarctic, including print-through from the opposite side of the paper.   Sadly, no one seems to identify who actually made it.  It pops up a few times on Pinterest, each ultimately pointing back to this address. I've run it through TinEye, Google reverse image search, etc., but can't find a match.  Would anyone happen to know who the original artist is?

Update:  Thanks to  Terror of Death 42 and gndn  for noticing the watermark pointing to the apparent artists website at robertsoo.com.

Functional Ethereal Compass

By "functional" I don't mean you can actually navigate between dimensional realms with it, but "Nathanel's Fob" from artist James Ewing will do just about everything else.  It unfolds from a decorative watch fob into a fiendishly clever navigational device with all sorts of interactive fiddly bits.  This is easily one of the most creative and well engineered original props I've ever seen.

Dwarven Tome Fragment

Paper and parchment burns.  Stone?  Stone is forever.  Dayne Hodson returns to our pages with this wonderfully creative Dwarven tome fragment.

The Face of Cthulhu

Basement FX has offered this mask for a while, but their latest iteration takes the basic sculpt to a whole new level.  This version is cast in translucent silicone.  The paint job really replicates the look of a deep sea creature that's never seen the sun.

Medusa

Professional sculptor Tom Kuebler brings us this amazingly detailed Medusa figure.  He's also the man behind the H.P. Lovecraft mannequin in Guillermo del Toro's personal collection.

The Obelisk

This impressive bit of propmaking was the centerpiece of the Event Horizon science fiction LARP earlier this year.  The event's Facebook page has a closer look at how it was made.
Behind the scenes at Event Horizon 1. We can finally unveil our major prop for the larp: the Ancient Machine, or the team's misnomer, the Obelisk.

Angelo Taylor built the obelisk, with design by Sadia Bies. It was a massive undertaking -- laser-cut panels, a control panel that opened the doors, lights, and a rotating chair. A HUGE thank you to the amazing Angelo for making this happen, and to Maya Ziv for doing last minute trouble shooting on site.

The King in Yellow

The talented Gage Prentiss returns to our pages with the King in Yellow. It's a great extrapolation from the original cover illustration by Robert W. Chambers.

Mythos Artifact

This intriguing piece of pottery was excavated by Russian artist Zelnik Hand Made. Those familiar with certain occult tomes, including the infamous Necronomicon and Unaussprechlichen Kulten, will notice parallels with particular mythic figures from those pages.

Mayan Cthulhu Idol

This nicely done Mayan Cthulhu idol comes to us from artist WestwoodFM.

Cthulhu Fhtagn! Yton Edition.

Artist Yton brings us this digitally sculpted Cthulhu idol.  It's just a matter of time until most props are created digitally and then 3D printed.  The only thing holding back the technology is the resolution of existing printers.  As the price of high detail resin printers drops they'll replace the low resolution filament units that currently dominate the field.

Awake the Golem!

This faux cuneiform tablet from Jeff Scarisbrick-Wright was a prop for a tabletop RPG. Players had to assemble the broken pieces and translate the inscription to activate a golem.

Smaug's Gold

Continuing with our dwarven theme, artist Victor Marin brings us a collection of gold and silver coins from Smaug's hoard.  These were modeled after the designs from Weta Workshop for the Hobbit films, cast in lead, and then gilded with silver and gold leaf.
