The use of fossils by ancient peoples takes an interesting turn in a book, The First Fossil Hunters; Paleontology in Greek and Roman Times, which postulates that early people finding large fossils gave birth to some of the ancient myths. Indeed, some fossils were on display in ancient temples as artifacts of the Titans or monsters. http://books.google.com/books/about/The_first_fossil_hunters.html?id=MXCQKJwLGS4C
The theory is intriguing and works well for the Mythos as well. For example here is a post by Michael W. Moses with a carved dragon finger bone http://mwmosespottery.blogspot.com/2011/04/large-ancient-alien-bowl-with-flowers.html
